I currently teach oil painting workshops at Oil & Dust, an independent art materials shop and creative workshop space in Lewes.Learn How Traditional Oil Painting Is BuiltRather than simply showing you what to paint, I teach you what you can do with paint.We explore how an oil painting is constructed from the support upwards ,from the preparation of the surface and the first tonal layers to colour, glazing, light and final refinement.The teaching combines practical studio work with the historical knowledge behind the techniques.From Byzantine Panels to the Old MastersMy approach begins further back than the usual Renaissance story.We look at the Byzantine and medieval traditions that shaped European painting, including:traditional panel preparation
rabbit-skin glue and mineral grounds
Armenian bole
gold leaf and gilded surfaces
the development from tempera and panel painting towards oilYou will encounter these materials through practical demonstrations and small studies, including genuine gold leaf on a prepared panel.This historical foundation helps explain why later oil-painting techniques developed as they did.The Classical Oil Painting ProcessYou will explore techniques including:Frottis - rapid monochromatic or tonal underpainting used to establish form and atmosphere.Alla prima - direct painting, working more immediately with colour and paint.Indirect painting - building colour and light through successive layers.Glazing & velatura - using transparent and semi-transparent layers to develop depth, luminosity and colour.Chiaroscuro - controlling light and shadow to create volume and dramatic structure.The emphasis is on understanding the construction of a painting, rather than following a formula.The Lineage of the MastersThe teaching draws on different periods and approaches within European painting.Leonardo da Vinci & Raphael
